Hi my name is Eugenio and I am Fundrising for Edith
Edith is a 76-year-old woman living in a modest, legally established middle-class neighborhood (known in Colombia as Stratum 3) in Santa Marta, Colombia. This is not an informal or illegally occupied area. It is a fully urbanized neighborhood with paved streets, sewage, running water, and electricity—an area that was never expected to suffer this type of disaster.
However, after days of intense rainfall, the Manzanares River overflowed, and large amounts of water and mud entered many homes in the area. Edith’s apartment, located on the first floor of a four-story building, was completely flooded with mud. Although the building remains standing, the interior of her home was severely damaged. All of her furniture, appliances, and personal belongings were destroyed.
Edith lives on a monthly pension of 1,750,905 Colombian pesos, which is roughly USD $440 per month or less than AUD $700. In Colombia, this income is considered “middle class,” but in reality, it only allows someone to cover basic daily expenses—food, utilities, and medicine. There is no room for savings, emergencies, or large unexpected costs.
Now, Edith faces an overwhelming situation: her 65-square-meter apartment (two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a kitchen) must be cleaned from top to bottom, repaired inside, and fully refurnished. Imagine living on a modest pension and suddenly having to clean heavy mud, repaint walls, fix floors, and then buy everything again—a bed, a refrigerator, a gas stove, basic furniture, clothing, and household essentials.
Edith has two adult children who care deeply for her. They will take responsibility for removing the mud, repairing the floors and walls, and restoring the basic infrastructure of the apartment. However, like many families in Colombia, they earn just enough to support their own households and simply cannot afford to replace all the furniture and appliances on their own.
This campaign is meant to cover only the essentials: basic appliances, a bed, simple furniture, clothing, and household items—so Edith can live her remaining years with dignity, safety, and peace of mind.
In developed countries like Australia or the United States, emergencies like this are often supported by insurance or government assistance. In Colombia, many elderly people fall through the cracks. This is why your help matters so much.
Every contribution—no matter the amount—helps restore not just an apartment, but a sense of stability, dignity, and hope for a woman who has worked her entire life and now needs a helping hand.
Thank you for being part of Edith’s recovery. Your solidarity truly makes a difference.
