Today, I am reaching out to share the story of a remarkable individual who has made a profound impact on our community—Edgar Martinez. Edgar is currently seeking asylum in Texas, but he has faced incredible challenges that have led to his detention by ICE. For over 20 years, Edgar has been a hardworking member of the Austin community. He has dedicated himself to a variety of jobs—starting in restaurants, moving into construction, and ultimately building his own residential contracting LLC. Through this business, he has provided jobs and assistance to hundreds of families. His dedication and commitment to excellence have earned him the respect and trust of his peers, and his work has visibly enriched our community. He is a determined and resilient person who has made every effort to move forward in this country—learning English, creating job opportunities for others, and always striving to be a good citizen to the people around him.

Edgar is also a very strong and caring person, especially when it comes to his family. He lost his father during the COVID-19 pandemic, and not long after, his mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. As an only child, Edgar took on the full burden of caring for her—working long days, seven days a week, to cover the cost of her medications and extremely expensive treatments. He put everything aside to make sure she was cared for, and the stress and exhaustion from those years took a toll on his own health. He worked so hard and worried so deeply that he became diabetic during that time. Tragically, his mother passed away just a few weeks ago, and as of now, he has not even received her ashes. He is still in deep grief, carrying the weight of this loss while facing legal and emotional uncertainty.

In addition to his professional contributions and family devotion, Edgar is known for his immense loyalty and kindness. He has a heart for those in need, often going the extra mile to help others—whether it’s through his work or by rescuing animals in distress. He is the proud caretaker of three dogs and two cats, and his compassion shines through in everything he does.

He is fighting to obtain the legal support he needs in his pursuit of permanent residency, a goal that will allow him to continue building his American dream and contributing to our community.
