Help Ed, the Real-Life Indiana Jones
Donation protected
My husband Ed Thomas is 82 and has dementia and I am requesting financial help so I can care for him at home. Medicaid age cut off in New Mexico is 65. So they are of no help. His Social Security payments are minimal because he spent a good portion of his adult life traveling the jungles south of the border digging and making historical discoveries as a pre-Columbian artifacts expert. Although lauded for his knowledge, it wasn't a good paying profession.
Ed and Frank Capra Jr. (friends from Acapulco, which was Ed’s home base for his adventures), met with Stephen Spielberg and another man (George Lucas?) to discuss an idea that Frank had for a film. Mr. Spielberg didn’t care for Frank’s idea but found Ed fascinating and invited him to dinner where Ed recounted many of his adventures in the jungles of Mexico and Central America. Ed was also wearing a fedora at the dinner. As a youngster, Ed’s grandmother advised him to wear a hat outside due to his fair skin. Although he was born and raised in Texas, Ed chose a fedora over a cowboy hat.
At that dinner, Ed didn’t know who Mr. Spielberg was. When the first Indiana Jones movie premiered, he realized Mr. Spielberg was the person who took him to dinner. Although none of Ed's stories were used, his essence was certainly present in the movie, including his fedora. But Ed was never granted a consultant fee or any acknowledgement. I realize there are thousands dealing with dementia but I'm hoping this plea for funds will find its way to Ed who has contributed to years of movie enjoyment with no remuneration. Any amount would be appreciated. Thank you for your consideration.
