When Ed first got the LVAD surgery he had already outlived his life expectancy three times. The only reason he got the LVAD surgery was to have a chance at having a good life with Karen Malwitz. Karen and Ed both committed a solid 2 months for his surgery and they learned how to stabilize and control the LVAD to where Ed could live a semi-normal peaceful life. The idea with the surgery was to give him more time until he could get a heart transplant. So far with the device he'd made it 4 years and the device is supposed to last 10. They told him it was his only chance of survival and possibly making it to a heart transplant. He quit smoking cigarettes and cut back on drinking as well as no longer being able to swim or bathe in an actual bath. He gave all this up for the chance to grow old enough to see everyone from his oldest to his youngest give him grandchildren and start to prosper on he wanted a life to be able to experience times with family. He was told at the original hospital UAB that he could be eligible for a transplant if he made it down to 265 lb. He's been losing a lot of weight and recently with his office visit before his current admission to the hospital, Ed had made it down to 280 lb and was still losing they thought his dry weight was 270 so he was 5 to 10 lb from losing enough weight to be eligible for a heart transplant. Ed has made all of the sacrifices necessary just to continue living to be able to spend more time with his family. And like normal your body will reject anything that's not part of it. Recently his device had suctioned part of his heart into the device and put it to where he couldn't even walk 5 ft anymore without almost fainting. Karen Malwitz and Sheryl Simpson got him to the hospital thinking it was only a low blood flow. That was 2 weeks ago. Immediately after we got into the hospital and we got back to the outback coordinator, Ed was told that he needed to go into emergency surgery because if he didn't he would die. The first surgery was success and they were able to replace the device with a new one; however, after that he started having problems almost immediately they had to leave his chest open for a week and continuously did surgery after surgery about five surgeries in a row in a 7-day period to make it to where he could actually be closed back up and wake up. He's now in a state to where he's been sedated twice they've had to re-crack open his chest. When they recracked open his chest they pulled a liter of blood off of him but not before it had already done the damage. He said snow in the CVC ICU of University of Michigan intubated and sedated. The doctors have said that Edward Malwitz is the third worst condition in the entire state. Even worse than Corona virus. Karen has to drive an hour every day just to see her husband and make sure he's okay while struggling to get information from the hospital. The other reason for this GoFundMe is also to save his household because while he's struggling in the hospital trying to just live his family's facing eviction. Any help you can spare in this desperate time is greatly appreciated and we thank you very much.
