Hi everyone,
My name is Micayla Barreto and I am setting this page up on behalf of my father, Ed Barreto.
Ed was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (a cancer directly affecting the bone marrow) in September 2011. At age 52, he received a bone marrow transplant and was fortunate enough to enter remission in 2012. 5 years later, he relapsed and fought hard to recover once again in 2019. In may of this year, we received the unfortunate news that the cancer has returned once again, and had aggressively spread throughout his entire body. Entering his third round of intensive chemotherapy 12 years later, has been extremely harsh on his body, mind and spirit.
On June 29th, his legs went numb and he took a pretty hard fall. He was rushed to the emergency room and later learned that he had developed sepsis, a life threatening complication caused by an untreated infection that entered his blood stream and immediately attacked his organs. This was very dangerous because he already suffers from heart and kidney issues due to prior complications. After one week in the hospital and two weeks in a rehab facility, he was discharged and approved to resume chemo again.
On Tuesday August 15th, he was rushed back to the emergency room only to learn that he is once again in septic shock. He spent the next 4 days battling for his life in the ICU and he remains there today. Being immunocompromised from the harsh chemo, makes him extremely susceptible to catching any infection again, resulting in a continuous life threatening situation. Our hearts are broken as we navigate through this difficult time.
While we work to find a long-term solution to account for the unexpected medical costs that our family is incurring, we kindly ask that you donate anything you can if able. With the rising cost of medical care for those who desperately need it, it has become almost impossible for our family to sustain this financial burden. We appreciate anyone and everyone who takes the time out of their day to help our family even if it’s by sharing this page. Thank you and bless you all.
UPDATE:
First and foremost, my family and I wanted to take the time to genuinely thank each and everyone one of you for your donations and support thus far. Unfortunately, Ed is still in the ICU fighting. Due to his weakened immune system, he came down with a little cold that rapidly developed into pneumonia. In the past day, they have had him on numerous antibiotics and breathing treatments. Tomorrow, he will undergo a bronchoscopy to attempt to remove the secretions from the bottom of his lungs. Meanwhile, his cardiologists are still working to stabilize his heart rate which we haven’t had much luck with thus far. Due to the pneumonia, chemotherapy has been put on hold again as he cannot battle both at the same time. Ed has been very strong and we are praying everyday for his journey to recovery. We are remaining hopeful and positive and your continuous prayers and support have helped make that possible. Thank you and god bless you all ❤️
