I’m a middle school teacher and athletic director in East Oakland, and I’m asking our community for help supporting three incredible student-athletes who have earned something special. These young men were selected to participate in the All-California Game this June, an opportunity that recognizes their hard work, talent, and commitment both on and off the field. For students coming out of East Oakland, opportunities like this matter — not just for sports, but for confidence, exposure, and believing that their effort can open doors.
The challenge is the cost. Participation fees are high, and two of the players also need football equipment to safely compete. Another student has earned the chance to represent our community on the basketball court but needs a new pair of shoes to compete at his best. As a coach and educator, I wish I could cover this myself, but I can’t — so I’m turning to the community that has always shown up for our kids. Every dollar raised will go directly toward registration fees, required football equipment, and a pair of basketball shoes for one deserving athlete.
These students represent the best of our school and our neighborhood. They show up to practice, support their teammates, and work hard in the classroom while balancing the challenges many young people face growing up in East Oakland. This opportunity is something they earned — we’re just trying to make sure finances don’t take it away. If you’re able to donate, share, or support in any way, it truly makes a difference. Thank you for helping us show these students that their community believes in them.
