At the beginning of October, our dad, Thomas Guess, began experiencing back pain that we assumed was just another round of bronchitis. He was treated for bronchitis, but within a week his condition worsened. After returning to Convenient Care, a routine urinalysis revealed a large amount of blood and protein in his urine, and he was immediately sent to the ER for further testing.

Once in the ER, Dad began showing unexpected signs of memory loss—forgetting where he was, how he got there, and at times even who his family members were. Despite multiple blood tests, scans, and evaluations from several doctors, nothing initially pointed to an infection or clear cause.

When his kidney specialist became involved, everything finally began to make sense. All signs pointed back to his kidneys, and we learned that Dad was experiencing renal failure. Over the following days, he underwent several trials of dialysis, but his body struggled each time. His blood pressure dropped dangerously low—at one point to 79/25—and each new set of lab results showed his kidney function continuing to decline.

After many difficult conversations and praying over what was best for him, our family has made the heartbreaking decision to place Dad in hospice care to ensure he is comfortable, supported, and surrounded by love.
