Throughout 2026, my dearest dog Yara has been through one of the toughest periods of her life.

After what initially seemed like a routine health concern and a benign growth, Yara was diagnosed in March 2026 with sweat gland adenocarcinoma (a rare form of skin cancer) in her foot. This news was obviously devastating. After consultations with veterinary specialists and multiple attempts to remove the tumors, it became clear that the best chance, and only chance of saving her life and giving her the best opportunity of happy and comfortable senior years was to amputate her affected leg to remove the cancer completely before it could spread further.

The surgery has been a success and Yara is now beginning her recovery journey as a three-legged dog. It is an incredibly difficult journey for her and has been a huge strain on my household but she is doing so very well at adapting. More importantly, the happy, bouncy dog I've known for so many years is now appearing again after 9 months in discomfort and pain and I have never been prouder of her.

Unfortunately, the financial reality of continuous veterinary care has been substantial. While I was fortunate to have pet insurance, the total cost of treatment exceeded my coverage limits. To ensure Yara could receive the surgery and care she so urgently needed, I have had to use all savings and place a large proportion of the outstanding fees onto credit. This has accrued an additional debt of over £6,000.

Financially, I do not regret this decision as my girl's health, comfort and happiness always comes first. However, this now leaves me in a place where I have no buffer zone for any future vet bills or sudden emergencies. Furthermore, I also now am needing to invest in a lot of home adaptations and extra dog care items to ensure Yara's home is as safe and as loving as possible during this time. As a result of potential ongoing recovery costs and the daunting repayment of the credit used to fund her treatment, I am reaching out to ask for help.

Any contribution, no matter how small, will help reduce this debt and allow me to focus on supporting Yara's recovery rather than worrying about the financial strain of the next few years.
