Easton was diagnosed with viral meningitis on 5/22. He was home doing pretty good however having headaches off and on which were responding to treatment. On the evening of Friday May 31st, Easton began having severe headaches again. About 5am Saturday he woke up vomiting. He was brought to Mercy. The doctor thought he either now had bacterial meningitis or an appendicitis as he was having terrible stomach pains as well. They did some lab work and a head CT. The diagnosis… he had swelling on his brain along with a 1.9 x 2.4 x 2.5 cm abscess. He was then transported to Children’s Hospital for further treatment. Upon arrival he had another head CT this one with contrast. The diagnosis remained the same. He was immediately rushed into emergency surgery and had a Craniotomy with abscess removal. After that he was admitted to the ICU where he currently remains. The abscess fluid was sent off for further testing and came back as a type of strep bacteria. It’s been a whirlwind of emotions…
They did an Echo and chest X-ray on Easton which had significant findings.
The Echo indicated the infection from the brain abscess is from his heart as he has Endocarditis. The treatment is the same for now as the brain abscess of IV Rocephin, Flagyl and closely monitoring the heart. They are also going to start him on a blood thinner to prevent possible tearing of the heart valve.
The chest X-ray indicated he also now has a pneumonia and fluid on the left lower lung. They may potentially need to drain the fluid on the lung however they are waiting for Cardiology to come consult first.
Easton has a long journey ahead of him however he is such a fighter! ❤️
The financial burden of medical expenses, along with missing work are something we do not weighing on this incredible family as Easton recovers.
