A* is a high school freshman living in Baltimore City. Instead of having fun with her friends, going to school, and getting into the kind of harmless trouble 14-year-olds should be getting into, she stays home. A tutor from the school district visits her. She doesn't get to go outside. Friends can only rarely visit. This is because A was recently diagnosed with late-stage bone marrow cancer, a debilitating disease with outcomes we don't like to think about.
Arriving at this diagnosis was not easy or fast. For years, A has endured endless doctor's visits, tests, getting poked and prodded, trying to get to the cause of the pain she was suffering. Along the way, A and her family also faced moments of discrimination making an already difficult process even harder. Her mother, B, has driven her to these appointments, disrupting employment opportunities and the regular challenges of everyday life. Tragically, B's husband, A's father, passed away in 2016. The two of them live together with A's older sister, who is also in high school.
Before she got sick, A was an active kid who loved dancing (specially Zumba!), swimming, and roller-skating. Her illness now limits many of the physical activities that once filled her with joy. Still, she continues to find happiness in arts and crafts, creating drawings, paintings, handmade jewelry, and felt crafts. She dreams of becoming a fashion designer and hopes to run her own business one day. She is incredibly excited for her Quinceañera!
For now, those dreams are overshadowed by mounting expenses the family can no longer keep up with. Basic home repairs have been put on hold. Even paying for gas and groceries has become a challenge.
But there is good news: The prognosis for A's cancer is improving. She is responding well to chemotherapy, no longer needs weekly blood transfusions, and (amazingly!) she is slowly starting to dance again. Still, the stress and fear her family carries is debilitating.

A* es una estudiante de primer año de secundaria que vive en la ciudad de Baltimore. En lugar de divertirse con sus amigas, ir a la escuela y meterse en los típicos e inofensivos problemas en los que debería meterse una adolescente de 14 años, ella tiene que quedarse en casa. Una profesora del distrito escolar la visita. No puede salir. Sus amigas solo pueden visitarla de vez en cuando. Esto se debe a que A fue diagnosticada recientemente con cáncer de médula ósea en etapa avanzada, una enfermedad debilitante, con desenlaces en los que preferimos no pensar.
Llegar a este diagnóstico no fue fácil ni rápido. Durante años, A ha soportado interminables visitas al médico, exámenes, pinchazos y procedimientos médicos para tratar de descubrir la causa del padecimiento que sufría. En el camino, A y su familia también enfrentaron momentos de discriminación que hicieron el complicado proceso, aún más difícil. Su madre, B, la ha llevado a todas estas citas, afectando sus oportunidades laborales y las dificultades cotidianas de la vida diaria. Trágicamente, el esposo de B, el padre de A, falleció en 2016. Las dos viven juntas con la hermana mayor de A, quien también está en la secundaria.
Antes de enfermarse, A solía ser una niña muy activa a quien le encantaba bailar (¡especialmente Zumba!), nadar y patinar. Ahora, su enfermedad limita muchas de las actividades físicas que antes la llenaban de alegría. Aun así, ella sigue encontrando felicidad en el arte y las manualidades: hace dibujos, pinturas, joyería hecha a mano y manualidades de fieltro. Sueña con convertirse en diseñadora de modas y tener su propio negocio algún día. También está increíblemente emocionada por su Quinceañera.
Por ahora, esos sueños están opacados por los crecientes gastos que la familia ya no puede cubrir. Las reparaciones básicas del hogar se han tenido que posponer. Incluso pagar la gasolina y los víveres se ha vuelto un desafío.
Pero hay buenas noticias: el pronóstico del cáncer de A está mejorando. Está respondiendo bien a la quimioterapia, ya no necesita transfusiones de sangre semanales y (¡sorprendentemente!) está empezando a bailar nuevamente. Aun así, el estrés y el miedo que carga su familia es abrumador.
