Earthy Young is the Assistant Director of the Gamble Institute and its Street Scholars Peer Mentoring Program located at Merritt College in Oakland CA. Street Scholars provides student services support and other resources for formerly incarcerated reentry students and their family members who have also been affected by the carceral state. Earthy has given his all to help those in need of his assistance and support. Now, in his time of dire need, it's time to give back to him. Earthy 's Mother Idell Young passed away last Sunday morning (4/30/2017). As Idell's health deteriorated, besides providing emotional and mental support, Earthy also provided the majority of financial support for his mother. This included various medical bills, as well as transportation and housing costs for his siblings, so that Ms. Young could have her family around her during and after her surgery for cancer removal. During this time of profound loss, Mr. Young is also facing numerous expenses that accompany the loss of a loved one, particularly the various funeral costs that included returning his mother’s remains to her home state of Mississippi; this alone is a $3700 expense. In the hope of alleviating some of this added financial burden, we have set up this gofundme account for the benefit of adhering to Ms. Idell Young’s wishes of being returned to her home state for interment. So that Earthy can spend this difficult time focusing on his family, rather than finding a way to cover all the expenses, we are asking that you give generously to someone who has given so generously of himself to so many others. We the scholars of the Street Scholars Peer Mentoring Program thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your donation of any amount that you are able to contribute to this worthy cause.
