Help Dug Run Again - Pancarpal Arthrodesis

We welcomed Dug into our lives in 2010, when he was just one year old and I was going through an incredibly difficult few months. I still remember the first morning I walked him and let him off the lead, immediately running back to me and wagging his tail. Over the next few weeks, I walked Dug for hours every single day, up hills and along rivers and across beaches. It wouldn't be an understatement to say that Dug played a huge part in me still being here.

Last year, after noticing Dug limping, we took him to the vet and found out he had arthritis which was only going to get worse. He's since put on 3kg and has gone from loving to run and swim to hardly being able to manage a ten-minute walk around the block. It's been heartbreaking as he clearly wants to keep going, but just physically can't manage it. He's become lethargic and depressed and he just seems so fed up.

We had been trying to control his condition with an anti-inflammatory and painkillers but it's been making little difference and his limp is getting worse every day. We've finally had to organise with a veterinary surgery to have a pancarpal arhtrodesis performed on Dug - an operation that will fuse the bones of the affected joint, which will stop it from being able to move but should hopefully make it much easier for him to use the leg.

We made a huge mistake in never getting Dug insured, he'd never had any health problems in the past. The operation is to cost between £3200-3800, which we will have to cover with a loan that, to be honest, we're not confident we'll easily pay off. Either way, Dug is at the surgery as I'm writing this and he'll be receiving the surgery tomorrow.

I can't quite put into words how much Dug means to me and how badly I hope to be able to walk him on the beach again - but the financial worry is also considerable.

I feel indebted to Dug - he has had a huge impact on my life and I feel so irresponsible for not having him covered earlier. Anything you can offer would be so overwhelmingly appreciated, from the bottom of my heart. I know Dug just wants to run through the water again, please help him enjoy that for a few more years.

The proceeds will be going towards the initial cost of the surgery. Anything over that will go towards paying off the interest or kept aside for future medical costs - there exists the possibility that he will need a similar operation on the other leg in the future.
