My name is Aundrea Hyde and as you may know, my brother Drew and his girlfriend Hannah were displaced by the Eaton Fire. While their apartment building didn't entirely burn down, it is uninhabitable and many of their belongings are damaged and unusable.

All of this has created a financial, physical and mental burden on them, and yet they still found the capacity to support their community while they were waiting to hear the fate of their apartment.

From Drew and Hannah:

Having both lived in Colorado for 8 years, when we moved back to California in 2021 we were excited to find an apartment in Altadena—a beautiful community with a slower pace of life, tucked away in the mountains with access to hiking and nature. We spent the last four years making it our home and are grateful for every minute we got to spend there.

Our apartment was in the heart of Altadena. On the night of January 7th, Drew was still at work when the fire broke out and Hannah evacuated with just a change of clothes, some important paperwork, and our laptops, thinking we would be returning the following day. From a hotel, we watched on the news as nearly all of the Altadena landmarks and our favorite places burned down and we assumed our apartment had too.

We were filled with an incredible sense of relief and gratitude to find that our apartment was still standing, largely thanks to the efforts of a neighbor who returned to the building to put out fires on the hedges surrounding the building and an external staircase that caught fire, while flagging down a fire crew for support.

We were not able to access the apartment until two weeks after the fire broke out and are now dealing with the reality that significant smoke damage and toxic ash have made the apartment uninhabitable and many of our belongings unusable.

As a result of all that has been going on we have both had to miss work to purchase necessities, find a new apartment, and handle filing insurance claims. We are seeking your support in covering unexpected costs. These funds will assist with needs that might not be fully covered by other sources of aid.
