My name is Drake, I’m a queer, Indigenous Māori man living in Australia. In March 2020, both me and my younger sibling were kicked onto the streets from our incredibly physically and emotionally abusive mother mid COVID crisis, and after couch surfing for 3 months we finally found a small apartment we were only able to afford because of a split payment with my younger sibling’s child support from my father.
That has now come under jeopardy as my father lost his job as of last night, and thus we will no longer be able to afford to stay where we are now.
I work three seperate jobs as well as raising my younger sibling (who is 15) by myself because of both absent parents, but even then I cannot afford this anymore for the both of us. I have secured her a safe place with my father, albeit she will have to leave her school, but since I’m an adult I don’t have that opportunity myself.
Since I am Māori and not an Australian citizen, neither me nor my sibling have received any relief or any stimuluses from the COVID-19 funds, and we are completely ineligible for any financial help from the government.
Being homeless last year stripped me of everything I owned except for the clothes on my back, and bankrupted me completely. Any spare money I have had from rent, bills and food has gone directly into trying to afford a car. We’re stuck on a very closed island off the coast of Queensland with next to no public transport, so a car is vital to me to be able to get to work.
I’m very very close to being able to afford a car, however I now have until the end of this year to scrape enough money together to move in with a friend; something that’s not possible for me to do alone after I lose all my money yet again after getting that car.
This fund mostly covers all down payments of me moving in, getting bare essentials, some bills and 2 months rent so I have time to find jobs in the area to regain my footing. It’s not all of the costs, but it’s a good start.
More importantly, I just finally want to be able to live a life I’m in control of without the constant threat of it being ripped away from me.
