On Monday, February 3rd, while doing a TV news live shot across the street from City Hall in downtown Los Angeles, this dog was hit by a car. A good Samaritan who witnessed the driver just take off and leave the dog to die in the street picked him up and brought him over to us. "He's dead," he said. "I just don't want him to get run over again."

But while he couldn't move, Downtown Dog was not dead.

I rushed him to the ER at Animal Specialty Group in Los Angeles, talking to him all the way there, and we made it just in time.

His blood pressure was dropping, he was severely dehydrated, and in a lot of pain.

A full-body X-ray shows he has multiple pelvic fractures, but of most concern is he cannot move or feel his right rear leg.

He may lose that leg.

There are other issues like fluid in his belly, which could indicate a ruptured bladder, and then there are the rocks and bones.

Those are in his stomach.

As the vet said, "It appears he's been scrounging for food on the street for a while."

Downtown Dog had no collar, is not chipped, or fixed.

The initial estimate that I have approved through tomorrow ranges between $8,900 and $11,100, of which I have already paid $4,400 (credit cards).

That does not include orthopedic surgery to repair his pelvis because he's too critical to undergo it today.

Many have expressed a desire to help this poor boy who obviously was failed by more than one human, and I so appreciate that.
