Help Douglas Vonder Haar Rebuild after Arson
On Saturday, March 7, our brother, Douglas Vonder Haar, was notified by the city fire department that his house on Stacia Street in Fairbanks, Alaska was engulfed in flames. Evidence clearly showed the fire had been intentionally set. In the blink of an eye it was lost. The property was not insured.
Douglas purchased his little house just over a year ago and spent last summer working on it to make it a cozy home, including installing new windows and replacing sheetrock. A hard worker and entrepreneur from a young age, the house represented his life’s savings.
In 2007, at only 8 years old, Douglas became an entrepreneur with our youngest sister. They began as street vendors selling ice cream, cold drinks, and other treats. Many children became familiar with the Wonderheart Treats cart that made its rounds in downtown and South Fairbanks neighborhoods for the next decade. Soon Douglas expanded to vending machines and many local restaurants and businesses have candy machines in place that have been owned and operated by him for over a dozen years. 
Douglas has never hesitated to help others. The treat cart frequently donated food and drinks to local groups, families, and individuals. Douglas has also contributed thousands of dollars to The Children’s Heart Foundation and continues to do so. When friends or neighbors need to borrow a trailer or a generator or even cash, Douglas always generously steps up.
With all his savings invested in his house, the financial impact on Douglas is overwhelming. We hope this fund will alleviate some of our brother’s financial burden as he rebuilds. We realize these are strange and difficult times and that it's much easier to contribute during periods of stability, but we also know beyond any doubt that Douglas will be paying it forward when he recovers from this devastating event.
