Help Doug Smith Get a Life-Saving Service Dog
Donation protected
Hello, I am Doug Smith. I am a person with a disability, born with Golden Har syndrome, which caused me to be born with one ear that I hear with. I have faced many battles in my life, my latest becoming a T1 diabetic after having my pancreas removed on 9/11/23. Now, my blood sugar levels fluctuate, going high and low.
My big problem is that with only one ear, I do not hear all the alert alarms going off when I am asleep and my blood sugar goes low. My blood sugar levels going up and down when i dont catch them in time are harmful to my body with the lows possibly causing me to go into a diabetic Coma at some point .If Bear is good will also train him whe i am in parking lots to warn me of traffic
My doctor suggested I get a DAD or Diabetic Alert Service Dog. They cost around $50,000 for a fully trained DAD and being disabled, there is no way for me to afford this on my own.
A Diabetic Alert Dog will be able to smell when something is happening with my blood sugars and alert me with pawling me , barking going between me and my family if i am awake or asleep until it senses a change iny blood sugar or me giving a sign that i am ok it can even be trained to call for help on a preset number
My wife would not have to worry as much if i go away or if she cant hear my alerts due to her medical issues since she would know we have the help of a service dog to alert us before i would go into a blackout or diabetic coma
- I am applying for grants and looking into all options.
The programs that offer free service dogs have about a two-year waitlist, then about an 18-month wait after that. So, we are going to try attaining one with selling some things, applying for grants, fundraising, and help from friends, family, and anyone who is able to help us attain the funds for my service dog.
Me and my family thank you for taking the time to read this and considering helping us archive our goal of me being able to live a safer healthy life
If i could ask if you are unable to donate could you please keep our family in your thoughts and share this out everywhere that would be a big support as well
Update
first goal is $5000 for a deposit in a training program, the deposit goes towards the first part of training and the equipment needed once we hit the first goal we will update with next goal
