Since he was just three years old, Doug has always been on a bike. Riding has never just been a hobby for him — it’s been freedom, independence, and pure joy.
Doug lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive muscle-wasting condition. Despite this, he continued riding a normal two-wheeled bike until he was 11 years old — determined, smiling, and keeping up with everyone else. Sadly, as his condition has progressed, Doug is no longer able to ride a standard bike. He is now unable to take any steps unaided and has recently moved into a power chair.
Last summer, Doug attended an accessible cycling session with his mum and sister. There, he tried a hand cycle for the first time — and absolutely adored it. From that day on, he has been asking for one of his own.
We’ve now been offered a wonderful opportunity: a second-hand hand cycle — the very one Doug loved at the event. It has even been refurbished with new wheels and handles, ready for many more miles and smiles.
With summer just around the corner and Doug desperate to join his family on bike rides again, there truly is no better time. Staying active has always been so important to him, not just physically but mentally too. A hand cycle would allow him to keep fit, regain a sense of independence, and most importantly, be right there alongside his family.
If you have the pleasure of knowing Doug, you know the beaming smile he brings wherever he goes. This bike would mean the world to him.
We understand that pennies are tight for everyone with the rising cost of living, and any support — big or small — would be appreciated more than we can say. Even sharing this page would make a huge difference.
Thank you for helping Doug ride again.
