I’m starting this GoFundMe to help support my parents during a really stressful and unexpected time. My dad, Doug, is currently off work recovering from an emergency eye procedure, and any financial support—no matter how small—would mean so much to our family.

Very recently, my dad experienced serious issues with his vision and was diagnosed with a detached retina in one eye. My parents had to urgently travel from Port Hardy to Nanaimo to see a specialist. They ended up spending nearly a week away from home in hotels while he went through multiple tests and procedures in an effort to save his vision.

Even now, we don’t know if his eyesight in that eye will fully return.

This week, they had to travel again for another appointment, where they were told surgery was necessary to try and repair the damage. This means more time spent in Nanaimo, including at least 2–3 nights in a hotel for the procedure and recovery.

On top of that, my dad is unable to do any strenuous activity for at least a month, which has forced him to take time off work. Between the cost of travel, accommodation, gas, and lost income, the financial strain has added up quickly—they’ve already spent close to $1,000 just getting to this point.

There will also be multiple follow-up trips to Nanaimo in the coming weeks for ongoing care.
