Doug Hattaway is facing another serious health battle. The bones in his ear, face, and jaw are further disintegrating, putting him at extreme risk for severe infections, including meningitis and other infections. For several years, doctors managed this with antibiotics, but that stop-gap measure is no longer an option. The bones are infected and coming loose due to the long-term effects of radiation.
Doug is currently undergoing 4 weeks of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, two hours a day, Monday through Friday, to heal deeper bone infections. His last session will be completed the first week of October. On October 20th he will travel to Charleston before surgery. On October 21st he will check into the hospital at 5:30 am for an extensive skull, facial, and jaw reconstruction surgery to remove dead bone and tissue. He will remain hospitalized for several days as a family member stays in a hotel during that time. After surgery, Doug will return home for 20 additional hyperbaric oxygen treatments, two hours a day for 4 weeks, to continue healing and prevent further complications. This surgery is only the beginning. Doug will likely face multiple additional surgeries in the months ahead as doctors work to stabilize his condition and preserve his quality of life.
Doug is no stranger to medical battles. He is a two-time cancer survivor, father, man of faith, and fighter. In 2008 he was diagnosed with Stage 4 sino-nasal neuroendocrine carcinoma, a tumor in his nasal cavity that spread to lymph nodes in his throat. In 2016 he faced Stage 4 soft tissue sarcoma in his jaw, caused by the very radiation that once saved him.
Because of these battles, Doug now lives with a permanent loss of taste and cannot eat food at all. He relies on daily shakes for nourishment and uses a custom prosthetic fake jaw that allows him to speak.
We are raising $7,500 to help Doug cover medical expenses not fully covered by insurance and living and household expenses for himself and his son while he is unable to work during treatment and recovery. Your donation will allow Doug to focus on healing while ensuring he can continue to provide for his son.
Doug’s greatest joy, and the reason he fights, is his son Asher. This year Asher will graduate high school a year early with honors. Doug’s fight is about more than survival, it’s about being there for Asher’s next chapter in life, to college and wherever that path may lead.
