Beautiful girl Dot joined Barley Greyhound Sanctuary a few months ago to start the search for her forever home. We knew she had retired with an injury to her stifle (rear leg) that had been seen and treated by a vet before she came to us and it was hoped that she could go on to live a normal life as a pet. Sadly it became obvious that she really struggled and was in a lot of pain with her leg. After having her examined by our own vet, with 3 vets and a specialist looking at her x-rays it was clear her leg couldn't be left as it was. After long discussions with the vet and even the specialist saying that surgery to fix the leg only had a very small chance of being successful we were left with 2 options...... amputation or euthanasia. We don't take decisions to amputate limbs lightly and where possible we would always opt to save legs rather than amputate but sadly that wasn't an option for Dot if she was to have a chance of living a long, happy life. Luckily Dot is a small girl and it is a rear leg amputation which should make adapting and coping with life as a tripod much easier for her. This morning she went in for her surgery and we are pleased to say it has gone well and we have just been to pick her up. She certainly isn't out of the woods yet as it is a risky operation but the vets are very pleased with how it's all gone and it's now a case of keeping her quiet and watching her closely while she heals. Dot is such a sweet and happy girl with a zest for life and we hope she will now be able to go on to live a long, happy and pain free life. We will keep you updated with how she recovers. She will be looking for a special forever home once she is fully healed. Your kind donations will help towards her vet bills and after care.
