This is my cousin, Dorothy Grey "Yoot" McCaskey, a woman whose life has been marked by incredible strength and quiet perseverance. Yoot was born deaf in a small town, ill-prepared to support people who are differently abled. She never had the chance to learn to speak, and in Lower Peachtree, Alabama, sign language is a rarity. But despite these immense challenges, Yoot has never let her circumstances hold her back.
At 71 years old, she's lived alone in the same house she grew up in, ever since my great Aunt Ruby Lee passed away in 2004. This house holds the memories of her family and childhood. It is where she's built a life of independence and dignity. Yoot is an intelligent, caring, and fiercely proud woman. She's a high school graduate and an expert seamstress, known throughout the community for her skill and heart. Whether babysitting for a neighbor, patching torn clothes, or lending a hand during tough times, Yoot is always there, helping others in any way she can.
But now, Yoot is the one in need. After devastating storms, her beloved home has slowly fallen apart. The water damage has ruined the insulation under her house and weakened the floors beneath her feet. Many electrical outlets no longer work, forcing her to rely on a dangerous web of extension cords. Her plumbing has failed, and at 71, Yoot is left carrying heavy buckets of water from relatives' homes to have enough to bathe and to drink. Her septic tank is leaking, and the standing water has drawn pests, including roaches and snakes. It's hard to imagine anyone living in such conditions, let alone a woman who has spent her life helping others.
The thought of Yoot, at her age, struggling to carry water and relying on an unsafe space heater that's connected to dangerous wiring, to stay warm in the winter is heartbreaking. My family has come together to raise what we can. Still, it's not enough for the extensive repairs her home desperately needs. Yoot deserves so much more than this.
We are asking for your help. Please consider donating to our campaign to give Yoot the safe and comfortable home she deserves. Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference. Together, we can show her that the kindness she's given to others all her life is being returned when she needs it most.
