Help Dormition’s Choir Attend The Liturgical Arts Academy!

Donation protected
Hi, I’m Richard Barrett, Director of Music for Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Somerville, Massachusetts, and we’re raising money so that our choir members can go to The Liturgical Arts Academy!

The Liturgical Arts Academy is a weeklong immersive experience that is one of the premier educational opportunities for Byzantine chant and iconography in the United States. For a week, attendees get six hours of top-shelf classroom instruction from the best cantors in the country every day, morning and evening services in the amazing Panagiotissa Chapel, lectures and talks throughout the week, and fellowship with other high level musicians from around the country.

TLAA is a unique and important spiritual, educational, and community opportunity that inspires, instructs, and motivates those who attend, while also yielding tremendous benefits for the home parish of the participants.

Over the course of the week, the singers:
  • build musical confidence that beautifies the parish's worship
  • bring home an increased liturgical fluency and familiarity through the daily services, with opportunities to direct and to sing, as well as the centerpiece All-Night Vigil
  • form peer and mentor relationships with cantors throughout the country, so that the community experience connects the parish music ministry to a broader collaborative network
  • recharge, refresh, and recommit to parish music ministry through the experience of the week as a spiritual retreat
Your support will make it possible for three of Dormition’s choir members to attend The Liturgical Arts Academy this year. We’re working to create the infrastructure so that we can support people to attend every year, and your gift will do a lot to make this possible.

$5,000 will cover tuition and transportation for three singers, with a bit of a contingency in case a fourth decides to come (we’re working on that).

AND, for every person who supports us, we will record the apolytikion for your patron saint (or, if you prefer, the chant of your choice) in the amazing acoustic of the Diakonia Center’s stunning Panagiotissa Chapel! Just tell us what you want us to sing (and specify language, if you like) in the comments and we’ll make it happen.

All proceeds will go directly to Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church of Somerville, MA, so gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Dormition will reimburse attendees for their participation costs.

Thank you for your support!
