Dorita has been my loyal companion and a source of endless joy since I rescued her from the streets of Quito, Ecuador, in 2014. When I first found her, she was in terrible shape—malnourished, with burns and injuries, but even then, her spirit shone through. My mom and I welcomed her into our family without hesitation, and Dorita quickly became the heart of our home. Over the years, she has faced many health challenges, from Cushing's disease and thyroid problems to multiple surgeries, but she has always bounced back with her signature cheerful howl and loving nature.

Last year, after her longtime sister Sofi left this earth, Dorita was ready to be with me, so I brought her from home to spend her golden years here in Dallas. Since then, she has had so many new experiences, met new people, and discovered new places. Even with all her underlying health problems, she is the happiest, sweetest, and most charismatic dog I have ever known. She continues to bring joy to everyone she meets, and her resilience is truly inspiring.

Recently, Dorita was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in her anal sac gland. We discovered it during a grooming appointment, and after several exams and visits to oncologists, we learned that the tumor had already spread to her lymph nodes. The tumor is now blocking her colon, making it painful and difficult for her to go to the bathroom. The only way to give Dorita a chance at a pain-free life is to perform a complex surgery to remove the tumor and affected lymph nodes, followed by chemotherapy. The surgery is scheduled for November 20, 2025, and while it is risky, her doctors believe it offers her the best chance for more happy years.

For those who know me, you may know that I am a PhD student here in Dallas, living on a small stipend and unable to work outside campus due to visa restrictions. My husband works full time and carries most of the expenses for our little home. I truly wish I didn’t have to ask for help, but after a lot of thought, I know this isn’t about me—it’s about giving Dorita a last chance at life. She loves life so much and she’s not ready to go. The cost of her treatment is overwhelming, and it surpases 10.0000, and while insurance may cover up to $5000 which is the cap, it won’t be enough. I am reaching out for support to help cover Dorita’s surgery and ongoing care.
