My name is Donovan, and I am living with Cerebral Palsy. For the past seven months, I’ve been in an apartment where navigating the stairs has become a daily challenge. My balance and mobility issues make it extremely difficult and risky to reach my bathroom and bedroom, which are both upstairs. The only exits are on the ground level, and not having a safe way to leave my apartment is a constant source of stress and worry.
I’ve tried to find an accessible apartment, but so far, nothing has worked out. Medicare and Medicaid do not cover home modifications like stair lifts, and local agencies have been slow to offer any help. My caregiver, James, does everything he can to help me with the stairs, but he has his own health issues, and it’s tough for both of us. Because of these challenges, I rarely leave my apartment and can’t enjoy my full living space.
A stair lift would make a huge difference in my life. It would give me safe access to my home, reduce the stress on both me and James, and allow me to live more independently. I’m hoping to get the stair lift installed as soon as possible so I can finally enjoy my apartment and have peace of mind knowing I can safely move throughout my home.
