Help Donna See Clearly Again: Urgent Travel Funds Needed for Eye Surgery
Hello, my name is Carol Kariainen, and I am creating this page for my sister, Donna Flye. Donna is facing a serious medical emergency that requires immediate action to save her central vision. Recently, Donna was diagnosed with a macular hole, a full-thickness defect in the most crucial part of her retina – the macula. This is the area responsible for the sharp, detailed vision we all rely on for everyday tasks like reading, recognizing faces, and navigating the world.
The impact of this macular hole has been swift and devastating for Donna. She's experiencing increasingly blurred and distorted vision, and a dark, growing blind spot right in the center of her sight. Every day that passes makes tasks we take for granted incredibly difficult and the risk of permanent vision loss tragically real. This is especially critical as Donna works as a dedicated in-home care worker for the elderly in our community. Her ability to drive her clients safely to doctor appointments and grocery shopping is essential for their well-being and her livelihood. The thought of her losing this ability due to a treatable condition is deeply concerning.
The good news is that the recommended treatment, a vitrectomy, offers a strong chance of repairing the hole and restoring her precious sight. Thankfully, Donna's insurance will cover the majority of the surgical costs. However, a significant hurdle remains. Due to insurance limitations, the necessary retina specialist is located in Traverse City, a grueling 408-mile journey from Donna's rural home in White Pine, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
This unexpected and urgent travel creates a substantial financial burden. We need to secure funds for multiple trips for pre-operative appointments, the surgery itself, and crucial post-operative care. This includes gas, lodging for Donna and her husband Tracey, and meals during these extended stays far from home.
For those of you who know Donna, you know she's a kind, strong, and independent woman who would never ask for help unless absolutely necessary. The thought of her vision fading away while we struggle with the logistics of getting her the care she needs is heartbreaking, especially knowing how much others in our community rely on her.
We are reaching out to our community, our friends, and anyone who understands the precious gift of sight, to ask for your urgent support. Every donation, no matter the size, will directly contribute to getting Donna to Traverse City as quickly as possible for this critical surgery.
Please help us ensure Donna doesn't lose her central vision and her ability to care for those who depend on her while navigating this unexpected medical crisis. Your generosity will make a tangible and immediate difference in her life and the lives of those she serves, allowing her to see clearly again and return to the independent and caring work she cherishes.
Please help donate if you can. From my own experiences donations here can lift a heavy burden off of the family and actually help the patient heal.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness and support during this desperate time. Please share this campaign with your network.
