My dear friend Donna is a single mother of 4, 3 of whom rely entirely on her for their housing and care. She was recently diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. Her prognosis is good, and she’s already recovered from the necessary surgeries.

However on Friday she starts chemotherapy, which will be followed by radiation treatment. She will be severely compromised for 5-6 months minimum.

She is a self employed esthetician, which means she’s not eligible for most government benefits and is even excluded from a lot of charities that require a w-2. She is currently planning to try to work through her chemotherapy. As a friend, colleague and fellow single mother, I am horrified that she has to.

Despite the unfairness of the situation, rent on her home and business space will not stop being due just because she’s unwell. Her children will not stop outgrowing their clothes or needing food. She’s resigned to the idea of not getting any time off to recover, but I believe in the goodness of the people both in my life and hers and that of strangers who may be touched by the incredibly difficult situation she finds herself in.

She is one of the smartest, kindest and most devoted mothers I have ever known. She’s been dealt an extremely rough hand, and your support through donation or spreading the word will make a world of difference to both her and her children.
