Hello, my name is Donna Robinson, and I’m a 59-year-old woman facing one of the hardest moments of my life. After years of stability, a series of setbacks has left me struggling to stay afloat. I’m reaching out for help because I’m at risk of losing my home and urgently need support.
It all started when I was renovicted from my previous affordable apartment, where I paid just over $600/month. Like many long-term tenants, I was forced to move when the building was bought by a corporation who wanted vacant possession to do extensive renovations. Everyone moved and they didn’t do the renovations and rented them for more than double the rent. I found a new place for $1,250/month and was working full-time, but just two weeks after moving in, I was laid off.
From there, my health deteriorated. I was diagnosed with diabetes and other medical conditions that required multiple medications. Unable to work and struggling with anxiety and depression, I had no choice but to go on sick benefits and eventually apply for welfare to get my medications paid for. Unfortunately, welfare only provides $733/month, and my rent alone is $1,250. As a result, I’ve fallen behind on payments and I’m facing eviction through an LTB court order.
Despite trying every possible avenue for assistance—community programs, rent subsidies, and even reaching out to local politicians—I’ve been told my situation isn’t eligible for help. I’m currently waiting for a response on my application for disability benefits (ODSP and CPP), but time is running out. My eviction is set for October 27th, and if I don’t pay the arrears, I will be locked out of my apartment by the sheriff.
I have no money to move, no help, and my health conditions make it hard to even consider living in my car, the local ‘tent city” or on someone’s couch, especially as winter approaches. I’m doing everything I can to avoid losing my home and all of my belongings.
I’m asking for help to cover my rent arrears and hopefully a few months’ rent to give me time to recover, find a solution, and secure stable housing. Your generosity will make an incredible difference in my life and allow me to avoid the devastating impact of homelessness. I’m providing my LTB order with my private information blacked out.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Any support, no matter the amount, will be deeply appreciated.
