Help Donavon and Tyler Overcome This Tragedy

Story

Hi! My name is Kelly. I'm starting this gofundme for my friend, Donavon, and her 12 year old son, Tyler. My son has been friends with him since preschool and Donavon has become a close friend of mine. So many people have been so gracious bringing food and gifts, but we want to try to help them with some of the financial burden. On June 12th Tyler experienced a terrible freak accident at home while playing with his 3D printer. He was immediately brought by ambulance to UNC Chapel Hill to their burn unit. 35% of his body was covered in 2nd and 3rd degree burns including his entire face, ears, chest, right hand and both legs. He spent the first few days in the PICU having surgeries to clean and debride the skin. It was the scariest of moments and his pain was torture. Tyler spent a few weeks in the hospital having his facial wounds soaked and cleaned 3x a day and his bodily wounds once a day and then all wounds required clean bandages and dressings. His pain was unbearable even with IV pain medication. He has been so brave and resilient! They are lucky that they do have insurance, but there is a high deductible and there are some things not covered by insurance. For example, Tyler needs special contacts to sleep in at night because his vision was damaged. The contacts are $1,800 per pair. The out of pocket deductible is $21,500. So far the invoices are upwards of $29k and still trickling in. Tyler requires around the clock care, which Donavon is providing solo while still on leave from work. Since her job is not remote, she will eventually need to go back to commuting to Durham and back every day, as well as weekly check ups to UNC Chapel Hill. At that time, she may need extra care to make sure Tyler has all the help he needs. Please consider helping Donavon and Tyler during this time. Every penny helps! Thank you!
