Help Cover Legal Fees from July 4 Incident

Hi everyone,

I’m starting this GoFundMe to raise money to help cover my attorney’s fees—$3,500—related to an incident that occurred on July 4th in Massachusetts.

That morning, a group who calls themselves cape ann indivisible hung a large “No Kings” banner from a highway overpass on Rust Island. In Massachusetts, it’s illegal to hang banners on highway overpasses without a permit, and this group did not have one. They also hired two private security guards to protect the banner.

My fiancé FaceTimed me and said that guards with tactical vests and fake badges were telling her they were law enforcement with the State Police. This alarmed me, as impersonating law enforcement is a serious offense. I drove down to the overpass, got out of my car, and began tearing down the illegal sign. As I did so, one guard ran around the back of my car, another around the front, and they surrounded me. They started grabbing my arms and trying to push me away from the sign.

I told them repeatedly, “Don’t touch me, you’re not law enforcement.” They kept insisting they were, but I knew they weren’t. They kept grabbing me and pushing me I acted in self-defense, throwing a couple of punches while continuing to take down the sign. Eventually, they admitted they were not police but claimed they were “working with” the State Police, which was also false. After the confrontation, I left the scene.

The Gloucester police report and local news coverage confirm these individuals were not law enforcement and had told others the same false claims before I even arrived the state police received complaints about these individuals saying they were with them and confirmed they were not on location.I fully support the First Amendment, but this wasn’t a peaceful protest—it was an illegal action, guarded by people pretending to be police officers, in hopes to provoke a situation.

Now, I’m facing legal charges and fees for standing up and defending myself . I normally never ask for help—especially not financial—but times are tough, and I could really use a hand. Any contribution toward the $3,500 attorney fee would mean a lot.
