My name is Mike, the oldest brother of Mitchell Chavez. On August 31st, Saturday early morning, Mitch was involved in a terrible crash on the northbound 405 freeway. He was sleeping on the way back to the San Fernando Valley and sitting passenger when the driver crashed going over 100 mph. The impact of the crash broke Mitchell's back in two places, broke his nose, and ripped open his sigmoid colon.
He had 3 different surgeries that took almost 6 hours. The surgery to repair his colon had several complications. This caused him to have a tube going down his throat to his stomach, which stayed in for 4 days. Mitchell did not have insurance coverage and will need many months of constant physical therapy.
He always loved playing sports like basketball and softball. With this incident, we’re not sure if he’ll ever be able to play these sports again. We pray and hope that with your help, he can plan ahead to receive the physical therapy to one day play again.
He won’t be able to work as he did prior to the accident because of this injury, and he will need to think about different career paths going forward. This is truly a life-changing event for our whole family, and we know God has a plan for him.
