Hi, my name is Savannah I’m one of Don’s daughters, on Thursday around 10 at night I was woken to the news of my fathers accident. My father was headed to from Lompoc to Santa Maria to play billiards at the Pool Hall. He ended up hitting a cement wall on his motorcycle going over 60mph and was dragged on the cement wall for over 100ft. He was flown to the Santa Barbara Cottage hospital because they had the best trauma center. He has road rash down the right side of his body, his arms/hands/wrists broken in multiple spots. His pinky was mostly taken at the scene. He had a bone go through his elbow, and may have a skin graft for it in one of his next surgeries. He has had 1 surgery so far out of 4. He’s going to get multiple plates and screws put in here in the next week. His next Surgery is on Sunday and I believe he will be in the hospital for a little over a week. He can’t feed himself, he can’t get water, and he can’t press the call button for help. For the past 30 hours I had to fight tooth and nail to see my father. I didn’t have a recent negative COVID test and I couldn’t go in to see him. CVS was closed so my only option was to wait all night. I had my friends drop me off in Santa Barbara so I didn’t have a car or anything. I sat outside on a bench all night until CVS opened and I could get the test. I asked them if I had to do anything special or if there was any way to do it, and they said no. So we did it normally he accepted it then told me I could throw it away. Luckily I got a photo before. He then told me my father wasn’t there and had moved after I was finally able to enter the building. I had to walk around the block to where he was admitted and they told me they wouldn’t let me in because I didn’t write my name and date on a certain spot of the test, and they didn’t believe me that someone in the ER told me I could throw it away. I threw a fit. They made an exception because of the time stamp on the photo. He’s not doing the best and wants me there but they aren’t allowing you to spend nights. I got kicked out last night very rudely because I fell asleep. My Dad was so upset and there was no way to text him to reassure him that I didn’t stay outside again last night. We’re reaching out to ask for help with a hotel so I can be close to my father during this time, and deal with the doctors. And they said there would be out of pocket costs, and Physical Therapy things. I’m not sure how much to ask for, this is the first time I’ve been in a situation like this. But literally anything helps. We appreciate you.
