2 years ago Don developed a small infection in his left foot due to a severe complication from a pre-existing medical condition, which tragically progressed despite numerous medical interventions and multiple surgeries.
Over the past 2 years Don has been hospitalized over a dozen times because of extreme blood and bone infections in both of his feet which led to Sepsis on multiple occasions. These infections have caused Don to eventually have all of his toes amputated.
Since Don had to continue to work and be on his feet all day, everyday, he never fully recovered from his multiple surgeries and hospital stays.
On July 18, 2025, Don returned to the Emergency Room due to another massive infection in his left foot. He was rushed into surgery to clean out another serious infection, which again, led to Sepsis.
Unfortunately, doctors determined that amputation of his lower left leg was the necessary course of action to save Don’s life and on July 23, 2025, he had this life changing amputation.
As of August 11, 2025, Don remains in the hospital and is supposed to be transferred to a rehabilitation facility this week. He will need ongoing physical and occupational therapy to regain mobility and strength, learn how to use a prosthetic leg, and adapt to daily life with his new body.
Don has always led an independent, active lifestyle. He has worked throughout his life as a master mechanic and manager of automotive repair shops. The loss of his leg and the impact this will have on his future remains unclear. He has lost all of his income since he is unable to work during the recovery period, adding financial strain to an already difficult situation. This surgery and ongoing care will lead to significant medical bills and medication costs.
A prosthetic leg, while offering renewed functionality and improved quality of life, comes with a substantial cost, often ranging from several thousand to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the type and complexity needed. These devices also require maintenance, adjustments, and replacement over time.
