On Saturday, May 30th, close to 10:00 p.m., Dominic Dubas—a dedicated Air Force firefighter visiting Austin from Alaska—was struck by a vehicle while walking near 6812 South Congress Avenue. The driver fled the scene, leaving Dominic critically injured on or near the sidewalk. He was not found for 30 to 40 minutes, and when paramedics arrived, they rushed him to the hospital with severe injuries: a traumatic brain injury, brain hemorrhaging, skull and facial fractures, spinal fractures, and a leg fracture. Dominic is still fighting for his life.

Dominic’s family has traveled from Omaha to Austin to be by his side, leaving work and incurring unexpected expenses for meals, lodging, and daily necessities. They are also worried about their obligations back home, including work, animals, and family. The emotional and financial toll is overwhelming, and the family is offering a reward for credible information that helps identify the driver or vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. Funds raised will help cover these urgent needs and support the ongoing search for justice for Dominic.

From Dominic’s mom: "To my Facebook friends and family, Dominic took a vacation to Austin, Texas, and on Saturday, May 30th, he was hit as a pedestrian. He was rushed to the emergency room after being found with a severe brain injury, brain hemorrhaging, a skull fracture, fractures in his spine and leg, and facial fractures. I received a call from the base commander where Dominic is stationed in Alaska, letting me know how serious his injuries were and that I needed to get to Austin as soon as possible. I originally reached out to try to find a private plane because I could not find a flight that felt fast enough, but I was eventually able to take a commercial flight and arrived in Austin Sunday morning around 10 a.m. When I arrived, I immediately spoke with the neurosurgeon, who told me how severe Dominic’s condition was. At that time, we were being prepared for the worst. Then Dominic showed a small reflex movement in his hand, and the doctors decided to take proactive measures. They performed surgery to remove part of his skull because of the swelling in his brain and to relieve the pressure. Brain injuries are rated on a scale from 3 to 15, with 3 being the lowest and most severe. When Dominic arrived at the hospital, he was at a 3. Today, he is at a 4, with very small hand movements. Even though this is a very small step, it is still a step in the right direction, and to us, it is a sign. We have also been told that Dominic has had multiple strokes. Right now, they do not know the full extent of his brain injury because it is too dangerous to lay him down for an MRI, so they are relying on CT scans for now. We are all devastated, but we are praying and hoping with everything in us that Dominic can recover. We are praying that he continues to give us signs that he is still fighting."
