It all started after a hit and run in Texas; I was on my bicycle; he was in his RAM 1500.

But this could have been any of us. We are the strong types who have it together, we are smart and healthy. And that can change in front of your eyes- when the right variables collide. Something you never saw coming can crumple the strong you like paper.

Whether you know me from Mount Pleasant or the Field School or Funk Night (Brown), from Camp Pendleton or Ft Benning you know I am strong. But the strongest thing 've done is post this GoFundMe asking for help. The military is an unforgiving place; a single sign of weakness can earn you "ridicule" and "disdain". God help you if you ask for help, from those that can help. And please do not ask for money from those that have it- you will get thrown out and be ignored.

And still I asked. And continue to ask. And continue to remind you that I am you: lucky to still be alive. We will all get sick, get injured and one day meet the Creator. But while we are here, let's lift one another up so we can be proud of making someone's life better.

You have gotten me so far already and now I enter the grueling physical therapy phase where I "learn to walk" again!

• Temporary in-home nursing assistance, pain medications, and towels for screaming into (if you know physical therapy, you know).
