Recent heavy rains in Ecuador caused a massive and deadly landslide in the communities of El Placer and Quilloturo, leaving at least 12 people dead, and many more injured and missing. This is the type of news you’ll see about the tragedy in Ecuador, which is pretty impersonal, and will pass quickly in the chaos of the news cycle. The entire community is displaced from their homes and facing the prospect of moving and restarting their lives altogether. The money from this fund will go directly to families in need who have lost family members and friends, and who must restart their lives amongst this heavy grief. We want to help them in any way possible.

My personal connection to El Placer began in September of 2022 when I was studying abroad in Ecuador. During my program I lived with a family in El Placer for a total of just over 2 months, a duration which may seem short to some, but for me living in this community changed my life. My host family was incredibly welcoming, lovely, warm and kind, and became my own adoptive family. I often have a hard time explaining to people back in the US just how much these people mean to me. For a more detailed summary of my experiences with them, you can also refer to this blog post I wrote for Fundacion Ecominga here. However, my experience wasn’t just limited to my host family. Living in this community gave me a glimpse of what a truly strong, united community can be, and gave me hope in the power of love and community, a hope that I had largely lost during covid and my own personal struggles with the death of my father. El Placer taught me how to love again, unconditionally, freely, compassionately, without fear, and expecting nothing in return. I will never forget that.

I wasn’t the only student living in El Placer at the time. We all connected strongly and deeply with our host families and the community. Anh recalls, “I remember my birthday party very vividly and how excited they were to share Scarlet’s special day with me even though it was only a few days we spent there initially. They really made everyone feel like family”, speaking of her joint birthday party with her host sister Scarlet.

Maddie remembers the time spent with her family - “From day one, my family introduced me as their daughter. Marlith - mi ñaña - and I spent hours together playing games and learning TikTok dances. She taught me so much Spanish, and is one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I know. Lupe treated me like her actual daughter and always looked out for me. If I didn’t understand a story or joke being told, she always took the time to explain it to me in words I could understand. They took me on so many crazy fun adventures. In El Placer, I learned the strength of a community that loves and supports each of its members. I learned that small communities can make an impact on the world. I learned how joyful life can be, even during times of hardship.”

Liam remembers fondly, "I loved my time living with Marina, Tito, and their kids. They welcomed me into their home and treated me like part of their family. One of my favorite memories is giving their two daughters piggy back rides and running through the streets of El Placer."

We have come together to organize this fund to help our dear dear friends and their loved ones, friends, and neighbors who have lost everything.

Estas son las noticias que van a ver sobre la tragedia que pasó en Ecuador, pero es bastante impersonal y no va a quedar mucho tiempo en el caos del ciclo de noticias mundial. La comunidad entera está desplazada de sus hogares y considerando el prospecto de mudar y reiniciar sus vidas enteras. El dinero de este fondo va a ir directamente a las familias afectadas quienes han perdido parientes, amigos, vecinos, y sus hogares y quienes al mismo tiempo tienen que pensar en cómo reiniciar sus vidas en medio de un dolor tan profundo. Queremos ayudarles de cualquier modo posible.

Mi experiencia personal con El Placer comenzó en septiembre de 2022, mientras estaba estudiando un semestre en Ecuador. Durante el programa viví con una familia en El Placer por un total de un poco más de 2 meses, una duración que tal vez parece poco a algunos, pero para mí cambió mi vida. Mi familia fue tan amable, amorosa, y feliz y se convirtieron en mi familia adoptiva. Tengo dificultad a veces explicando a los estadounidense qué tan importantes son para mí. Pero mi experiencia no fue limitada a sola mi familia. Vivir en esta comunidad me dio un vistazo a cómo puede ser una comunidad realmente unida y fuerte. Me dio esperanza a creer nuevamente en el poder del amor y la comunidad, una esperanza que en su mayor parte había perdido durante el covid y mi dolor al perder a mi papá. El Placer me enseñó a amar otra vez, amar sin condiciones, sin miedo y sin expectativas, libremente, y con compasión. Eso no lo olvidaré nunca.

Yo no fui el único estudiante viviendo en El Placer en ese entonces. Todos tuvimos una conexión tan fuerte con nuestras familias y la comunidad. Anh se acuerda “Recuerdo mi fiesta de cumpleaños como si fuera ayer. Todos estaban muy emocionados por compartir este día especial de Scarlet conmigo, aunque en esta fecha solo habíamos estado en la comunidad unos días. Realmente hicieron que todos se sintieran como familia” dice Anh, hablando de su fiesta de cumpleaños junto con su hermana anfitriona, Scarlet.

Maddie recuerda “Desde el primer día mi familia me presentó como su hija. Mi ñaña Martlith y yo pasamos muchas horas juntas jugando y aprendiendo bailes de TikTok. Ella me enseñó mucho español y es una de las personas más amables y atentas que conozco. Lupe me trató como si fuera su hija real y siempre estaba allí por mi. Si no entendía un chiste o una historia siempre tomaba el tiempo para explicarlo en palabras que podía entender. La familia me llevó siempre con ellos para muchas aventuras divertidas. En El Placer aprendí la fortaleza de una comunidad que ama y apoya a todos sus miembros. Aprendí que comunidades pequeñas pueden cambiar el mundo. Aprendí qué tan feliz puede ser la vida, incluso durante tiempos difíciles”

Liam recuerda , "Amaba el tiempo que pasé viviendo con Marina, Tito, y sus hijas. Me dieron la bienvenida a su familia y me trataron como parte de ella. Uno de mis recuerdos favoritos fue llevar las dos hijitas en mi espalda y corriendo en las calles de El Placer"

Por esta razón nos hemos reunido para organizar este fondo, para ayudar a nuestros queridos amigos que son como familia, y sus seres queridos, amigos, y vecinos.
