- Hi, this is Chris Donley, and I am trying to get a disabled American Vet back into his home from which he was wrongfully evicted. David is 100% service related disabled, on July 7, 2022 the Sheriff served him with papers to immediately vacate his home. 985 Florida St Canon City, CO, has been his home for 33 years; he owned it free and clear. 3 years ago he paid the last payment on his VA home mortgage. Due to a misunderstanding, his property taxes, which were to some extent exempt, were unpaid and an investor paid them. Then, in January 2022, the treasurer deeded it to a group of investors. However, due to his disability, David had a 9 year right of redemption that he was not allowed to exercise. We tried to stop the action immediately, but the courts are slow. Since then, David has no place to stay; all his belongings collected over 33 years have been thrown in the dump by the investors. We need help getting David's home back, he will need furniture, household items, clothing, pretty much everything. In service to this country, David was shot in the head and is partially paralyzed on his left side. We cannot make this Veteran homeless. We need help.
- How the funds will be used. We have paid $2000 retainer for an attorney, we believe we will need $2-3000 more. Once we regain David's home, the estimated tax bill is around $3000. David's home will need some repairs, some are deferred maintenance but since it has been vacant, it has been vandalized, most windows broken out, the conservative estimate for repairs is $5000. David will then need the items we mentioned above, and as you can see in the photo above, they even threw away his wheel chair!
- UPDATE: The attorney for the investors say they will break us in court costs and attorneys fees, they say they do not even believe he is disabled. That it is "easy" to get a designation of "disabled" from the VA. What an insult to our veterans!
