My dear friend Manny, whom I have known for more than 20 years, was severely injured in a car wreck several years ago, requiring eight screws and titanium rods to be placed in his spine. He is now disabled and has been spending 100% of his time trying to take care of his mother Isabel, who is in late-stage dementia (stage seven, very severe cognitive decline).
Manny has been working as much as he can driving for Uber for the last year and a half because his mother qualifies to go to a daily daycare. This gives him time to drive for several hours before returning to pick her up and take her home. He has had no assistance and cannot afford to have anyone come in to help with his mother so that he can take a break. Manny has also been dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists. Making it very difficult to tend to her daily needs.
He has reached out to me to try and put this GoFundMe together as a last hope to get some money to help with his mother. His mother is a legal resident of the United States and has been here for more than 5 years but because of her dementia, she is unable to pass the test to become a full citizen. Therefore, she does not qualify for Medicaid or Medicare. To make things worse, he was involved in another accident recently, that was not his fault, and his car is failing.
Yesterday, February 21st, 2023, his mother had to be taken to the hospital where the doctor said that she now needs in-home hospice care. Because she does not qualify for Medicaid or Medicare, Manny is going to have to find a way to get the money to have a hospice nurse come in twice a day as well as pay out of pocket for all medical equipment such as a hospital bed, wheelchair, potty, and walker.
To add salt to the wound, now that his mother has to remain home in hospice care, she cannot go to the daycare. When she loses her spot in the daycare, she also loses access to the program that provides her with free Ensure supplement drinks and diapers. Also, because of this going on for the last year and a half, he has to sell his home because he can no longer afford the house payments, and he cannot get his mother up and down the stairs in a second-story condo.
Manny is one of the best human beings I have ever met, and I consider him to be a dear friend. After going through something similar to this with my mother, although I had the help of four siblings, I simply don't know how he's made it this far without having a heart attack.
If there is any way you can please give any amount to help him and his mother so that she can have some dignity, or at least please share this on all of your social media platforms. I have been permitted by Manny, who is the guardian of his mother, to put this information out, but I am protecting their anonymity because of dealing with health information by not providing their last names.
Every single penny that is donated after GoFundMe fees will go straight to Manny and his mother.
Thank you so much for donating, promoting, and sharing this campaign.
