Here's a message from Dion:
"Hello my name is Dion Evans. I am a 42 yr old man who is starting life over. I've spent the last 17 1/2 years behind prison walls for two burglaries I committed when I was a 25 year old boy in adult clothes. I graduated with honors from a Christian school and was signed up for the Marines. The day before I was going to take the military exam I was assaulted and had to be put into a coma for two days until the swelling went down. I never made it to Paris Island but I did make it to the wilderness that God had let my decisions place me in.
I am asking for help, because my pride has never let me before. I never want to go back to prison again in cuffs but I do want to bring hope. I have goals and a plan of action on paper and I need your help so that I can make through the Collateral Sanctions that are placed in front of me even after my time in prison. A Collateral Sanction is a road block or barrier placed upon anyone with a felony. Ex: Can’t get a job with a felony, or move into a certain place, or even get certain types of assistance!
In prison I completed almost 250 Retention, Emotion, Cognitive Behavior, Educational, and Recovery programs. Gained 6 Certifications, my Minister License, Motor Vehicle Ventilation Air Conditioning License, Forklift Training Certificate and my Paralegal License. I completed 3,337 hour towards a 6,000 Apprenticeship for H/VAC. I was in 10 plays from playing Jesus, to playing Hamlet. 8 choirs, 1 Sign language Choir, 1 Stomp team, 3 Documentaries, was apart of multiple Tedx events. I was in Barber College, two Maintenance departments, apart of multiple Mentorship groups, ToastMaster, the Head of the Recovery Service Organization, and am 4 classes away from gaining my Associates Degree in Business Administration. Since February 22, 2024 when I came out to the halfway house, I’ve gained my OSHA 30 Certification, my Forklift License, my ServSafe Certificationand my OSHA Flaggers Certification. I’ve completed the Urban Leagues 4 week job readiness program, the ARCH organization Computer literacy class, the Alvis House H.I.R.E program and completed the job readiness training at the CEO- Center of Employment organization. I spoke at a TYRO Fundraiser and even at the State House in Columbus Ohio about my experiences and Senate Bill 37. My business plan for my Motivational Speaker Agency is in motion with help from the Urban league and my church LifeVineyard on Alum Creek Dr have helped with bus passes, a scooter, counseling and love. I’m not asking for a hand out, just for a hand up! I want to earn my way out here so hopefully I can find help to do that! Thank you no matter what!"
