On March 21st, our dearest friend Dina was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in Mexico that resulted in a deep open wound on her right thigh just above her knee. She was treated at a nearby hospital, where her wound was cleaned and sutured. However, in the days that followed, complications arose—her wound became severely infected, with a foul odour and necrosis of the wound (dead tissue).

After an MRI to determine the extent of the infection, Dina was rushed into emergency surgery in Punta Mita to remove infected and dead tissue, where the doctors diagnosed the infection as necrotizing fasciitis (flesh eating disease). She came dangerously close to losing her leg and with the extent of the infection, it could have cost her her life. Thankfully due to timely medical intervention, she is now in stable condition and the infection has been contained. However, her journey to recovery is far from over.

Despite containing the infection, she must remain in the hospital for at least two more weeks, undergo two additional surgeries, and continue treatment with a negative pressure system (which requires the use of a sponge covering the wound) and a double antibiotic regimen. Once her condition stabilizes further, she may require skin grafts or advanced dressings to help her wound heal properly. With the high risk of further complications, close medical monitoring is essential, and she will not be released from hospital until the wound has completely healed, and down the road will require physio with the potential of other surgeries depending on the extent of ligament damage to the knee or thigh.

We all know Dina is a force, and were she not confined with strict instructions to her bed, she’d likely be out working with a sponge strapped to her knee! However, this unexpected setback has left Dina unable to work, and the mounting hospital expenses are a significant burden.

We are reaching out to our community to help Dina heal without the added stress of financial hardship. We can all recall a time when Dina selflessly stepped up to help out, pitch in or save our asses! This time she needs our help. El 21 de marzo, nuestra querida amiga Dina sufrió un grave accidente de motocicleta que le provocó una profunda herida abierta en el muslo derecho, justo por encima de la rodilla. Fue atendida en un hospital cercano, donde le limpiaron y suturaron la herida. Sin embargo, en los días siguientes, surgieron complicaciones: la herida se infectó gravemente, desprendiendo mal olor y necrosis (tejido muerto).

Tras una resonancia magnética para determinar la extensión de la infección, Dina fue sometida a cirugía de urgencia para extirpar el tejido infectado y muerto. Los médicos diagnosticaron la infección como fascitis necrosante (enfermedad carnívora). Estuvo a punto de perder la pierna y, dada la gravedad de la infección, podría haber puesto en peligro su vida. Afortunadamente, gracias a la intervención médica oportuna, ahora se encuentra estable y la infección ha sido contenida. Sin embargo, su recuperación está lejos de terminar. A pesar de contener la infección, deberá permanecer hospitalizada al menos dos semanas más, someterse a dos cirugías adicionales y continuar el tratamiento con un sistema de presión negativa (que requiere el uso de una esponja que cubra la herida) y un régimen doble de antibióticos. Una vez que su condición se estabilice, podría requerir injertos de piel o apósitos avanzados para ayudar a que la herida cicatrice correctamente. Dado el alto riesgo de complicaciones adicionales, es esencial una estrecha vigilancia médica, y no recibirá el alta hospitalaria hasta que la herida haya cicatrizado por completo. Más adelante, necesitará fisioterapia y posiblemente otras cirugías, dependiendo de la gravedad del daño en los ligamentos de la rodilla o el muslo.

Todos sabemos que Dina es una fuerza, y si no estuviera confinada en cama con instrucciones estrictas, ¡probablemente estaría trabajando con una esponja atada a la rodilla! Sin embargo, este imprevisto ha dejado a Dina sin poder trabajar, y los crecientes gastos hospitalarios representan una carga considerable.
