Hey everyone! I'm Diane, life-long cuddler of cats, and in February I adopted this handsome little kitty, Dimitri, whom I have come to love and cherish.
Don't let his cuteness fool you though, because this little guy is a fighter! For the past few weeks, Dimitri has been in the fight of his life to overcome a deadly infection known as Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP).
To give a little background: since rescuing Dimitri, he's had an ongoing list of various health issues that seemed impossible to pinpoint ..until late April. After countless trips to the vet and pet ophthalmologist, it was concluded that the only plausible diagnosis left was FIP.
Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a rare mutation that occurs in some kitties when they get a common virus. If left untreated, it is fatal for cats typically within days to weeks. The day I learned that was the case for Dimitri, I knew we had to act fast. Thanks to the help of some very proactive cat lovers on Facebook, he was already undergoing treatment that very night.
The difficulty with the FIP treatment is that due to pharmaceutical logistics (which you can easily read more about with a quick google search), the only existing treatment for FIP is not available for vets to prescribe. It is costly, extensive, and honestly exhausting. It consists of an 84-day treatment plan, in which the cat needs an injection administered every 24 hours. Depending on where the virus settles in the body, the cat needs a higher dose. And as the cat gains weight, the dose increases. In Dimitri's case, the virus has settled in his brain and eyes, which requires the highest dosage of the medication. The good news is that once Dimitri completes treatment and bloodwork looks good, he is cured for life!
I'm still learning a lot as I go, but the first thing I knew when I learned of this insane treatment plan, was that I would never forgive myself if I didn't at least try it....which leads me to this Go Fund Me page!
As I have gone to great lengths to help Dimitri fight this virus, the financial burden has added up. So I put together this Go Fund Me to ask for help in raising money for Dimitri's treatment and related vet expenses. Since the dose increases as we go, it has been hard to budget the total cost. I’ve ballparked $5,000, and any amount raised that I end up not needing for Dimitri's treatment will be donated to one of the many other FIP kitty families I have met along the way.
