My name is Diego Alvarez Beltran, and I’m 32 years old. I’m going through a tough time with my health right now. Over the past month, I’ve been hospitalized twice because of chronic osteomyelitis, a serious bone infection. This infection has spread to my joints and bones, and there’s a risk it’s caused dead tissue, which can be life-threatening if not treated quickly. Osteomyelitis is a tricky condition that often needs long-term antibiotics and multiple surgeries. In my case, I’ve already had four surgeries on my left hip to try to control the infection. If it doesn’t improve, my doctors have warned that a hip disarticulation—a surgery to remove part or all of the hip joint—might be necessary to stop the spread.I also live with other health challenges. I was born with spina bifida occulta, a condition where the spine doesn’t form properly, which has left me with paraplegia. I also have polycystic kidney disease, a genetic condition that causes cysts to grow in my kidneys, leading to kidney failure. I’m now in end-stage renal disease, meaning my kidneys no longer work on their own, and I need ongoing medical support. These conditions make everyday life harder and increase my risk of infections like osteomyelitis.My family has been deeply affected. My mom has been my main caregiver my whole life, but as she gets older, it’s harder for her to manage alone. My sister, a college student, helps by driving me to the hospital an hour away, but juggling school and my care is a lot for her. My 17-year-old brother can’t drive yet, so he’s unable to help with transportation. The costs of hospital stays, medications, travel, and home nursing care are piling up, and it’s overwhelming. Still, I’m incredibly grateful for my family’s support, especially my sister, who’s been a rock since we lost our dad to cancer three years ago.Living with paraplegia and chronic illness has taught me to stay strong, keep pushing forward, and cherish time with loved ones. En el último mes, me han internado dos veces por osteomielitis crónica, una infección súper seria en los huesos. Se ha extendido a mis articulaciones y huesos, y hay riesgo de que haya tejido muerto, lo cual es peligroso si no se trata rápido. Esta enfermedad es pesada: necesita antibióticos por mucho tiempo y varias cirugías. Ya me han operado cuatro veces en la cadera izquierda para controlarla, y si no mejora, podrían tener que hacer una desarticulación de cadera, que es quitar una parte de la cadera para frenar la infección.Además, vivo con otras condiciones. Nací con espina bífida oculta, que afecta mi columna y me dejó con paraplejia. También tengo enfermedad renal poliquística, que hace que crezcan quistes en los riñones, y ahora estoy en insuficiencia renal terminal, o sea, mis riñones ya no funcionan solos y necesito tratamiento constante. Todo esto hace mi día a día más difícil y me hace más propenso a infecciones como esta.Mi familia está sintiendo el peso de todo esto. Mi mamá ha sido mi cuidadora toda la vida, pero ya le cuesta mucho sola. Mi hermana, que estudia en la universidad, me lleva al hospital, que está a una hora, pero es duro para ella balancear todo. Mi hermano menor tiene 17 y no puede manejar. Las cuentas del hospital, medicinas, viajes y cuidados en casa nos están ahogando. Aun así, estoy súper agradecido con mi familia, especialmente con mi hermana, que ha sido un pilar desde que perdimos a mi papá por cáncer hace tres años.Vivir con paraplejia y enfermedades crónicas me ha enseñado a ser fuerte, a no rendirme y a valorar cada momento con los míos.
