Our hearts are heavy as we share what we are facing. After 26 years of being happily married, our lives have been turned upside down. My dear husband, Dewayne, a faithful Christian elder, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. As his wife and partner in life and faith, we are facing critical medical decisions that must be made quickly, and we are leaning on prayers to Jehovah, faith, and hope to guide us.

After speaking with medical professionals and doing extensive research, we have learned that Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, offers one of the most advanced pancreatic cancer programs in the country, especially in bloodless medicine, which is essential for Dewayne’s treatment and surgery, while fully honoring our Bible-based conviction to refrain from blood transfusions. Receiving care there gives Dewayne the best chance to overcome this illness.

The specialized care that Dewayne requires is not available in our state. While we do have health insurance, Johns Hopkins is out of network, which means approval is uncertain and coverage may only pay a fraction of the cost, or may not approve the treatment at all. Waiting or settling for less specialized care could greatly limit Dewayne’s options, and time is critical.

In addition to medical expenses, this journey brings many immediate and unavoidable costs, including travel to and from Baltimore, lodging during treatment and recovery, meals and daily living expenses, and time away from work with loss of income. The financial burden is overwhelming, and we cannot manage it alone.
