My name is Devin, and I’m sharing this story so those that care about me can know what happened and support if able.
TLDR / Summary:
I was wrongfully arrested for "evading" because I had a cop follow me off the very first exit on a tollway, and into the very first available stop (a gas station parking lot). The case was dismissed and expunged from my record, but incurred a $4,000 total setback. I was in jail for 2 days, missed 2 days of work, my car got towed and had to pay $500 to get it out, and had my Switch 2 and hair straightener (why bro) stolen.
Full story:
On Easter Sunday evening at roughly 11:50pm I was driving to work, and a cop shined their lights behind me. They were tailgating me like CRAZY by the way. The shoulders of the road were slim, so for the cop's safety I had them follow me off the first available exit, and into the first stop (a gas station parking lot).
I came to a full stop voluntarily and when they pulled me out of my car there were 3-4 cop cars around me and I was placed under arrest for "evading". I complied completely with the cops.
It was the first and only time I have ever been arrested. I ended up in county holding areas / jail for 2 days. The tow trucker stole my Switch 2 and hair straightener (whyyy). It was an absolutely terrible experience where I couldn't even contact my job or loved ones for several hours.
Baloney sandwiches and water fountain water were all I had to survive on, and the restrooms were disgusting. I talked to a bunch of the other inmates and learned as much as I could about how messed up the system is, I will be sharing their stories anonymously on my stream.
Furthermore, I was calling and working with ONE friend to get myself out. The bail bond companies are VULTURES in any arrest and they contacted numerous members of my family, LEAKING my business. Absolutely disrespectful.
Bail was set at $20,000 and I managed to get out for $1,500 with a bail bond company. I went to court the following day and before the Judge even saw me I was told by my lawyer that my case was getting dismissed (upon taking a $50 course) and expunged from my record.
The losses include: $1,500 bail, 2 days of work lost, ubers and rides to and from court, $500 to get my car out of the lot, Switch 2 and hair straightener stolen. About a $4,000 setback all things considered. Not to mention the emotional trauma from this experience. Plus, while I was in custody my cat got out and got a scratch on his face. Poor little thing, my roommate got him back in.
Any funds raised here will go directly toward recovering from court fees, repairing my car (which my rainy day money was originally saved for), and replacing my Switch 2 so my daughter doesn't feel the sting of the Switch 2 going missing (besides having to make a new Animal Crossing island). She and I played on the Switch 2 all the time, and Pokopia was inside it, so it's a $570 theft.
Your help doesn’t just support me—it helps my whole family. I’ve been working hard (48 hour work weeks + streaming) to save up for a home and for my daughter / dog / cat and, hopefully, more children someday. Any support you can give means the world to us and brings us one step closer to overcoming this setback. Thank you so much for reading and for any help you can offer.
