Hi all,
My name is Devin Markland. I hold a B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature and am currently pursuing my M.A.E. with a concentration in Pedagogy at Northern Michigan University. I’m about halfway through the program, taking three courses each semester across summer, fall, and winter terms, while also working two jobs.
At present, I serve as a paraprofessional at a local high school, where I support our English Language Development (ELD) students. My role involves providing both language and content support, encouraging students to advocate for themselves, and reminding them that there’s more than one way to approach learning. Working with English Language Learners has become a true passion of mine, and I want to continue this work throughout my career as an educator.
This summer (Winter semester), I have the exciting opportunity to join a 10-day study abroad program in San Ignacio, Belize through NMU. During this program, I’ll gain hands-on experience teaching and supporting ELL students in a local school, as well as volunteering in the community, including at a local market. Beyond the academic excursions, this experience will allow me not only to share my skills but also to learn invaluable lessons directly from the students and teachers I’ll be working alongside.
As a graduate student, financial aid for opportunities like this is limited. Despite working two jobs and maintaining a full academic load, covering the cost of this program on my own is not possible. That’s why I’m seeking support to help make this professional and personal growth experience a reality.
Any donations received will go directly to the program fees, which include housing, meals, transportation, excursions, and more! I truly appreciate any help and look forward to growing as an educator from this experience!
