Hello, my name is Desteni Rivers and I am currently a Junior at the University of Pennsylvania. Since the start of my Penn career, I’ve been looking forward to studying abroad. Fortunately, I have recently been accepted to study at the University of Cape Town (UCT) during the spring semester of 2019! I will be enrolled as a full time student at the University of Cape Town from January until early June. I will have the opportunity to enroll in classes within and outside my major and minors to further my knowledge in how one’s multiple identities can affect their physical health. I will also have an opportunity to serve the Cape Town community through community-based service and outreach specifically focusing on public health. Additionally, I will be able to gain the invaluable experience of living in another country, which I can then use this knowledge to better my community.
I have been working extremely hard to save money for this experience; however, I am reaching out for additional financial support. Students are required to purchase their own plane tickets to and from Cape Town, and the price of the flights start at $1200. Additionally, student visa regulations restrict my ability to work in South Africa, so additional financial support for general expenses such as food, transportation (to and from campus), toiletries, etc. for my entire time abroad would be useful and greatly appreciated.
A Little About Me…
I am majoring in Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies with a double minor in Medical Sociology and Law & Society. I aspire to work in the field of public health to make healthcare accessible for all. I am currently the president of Consent Collaborative, an umbrella group consisting of four anti-sexual violence organizations on Penn’s campus. I work as an anti-sexual violence peer educator on my campus as well. I am also the Media and Communications Chair of Ase Academy, a student-led mentorship academy for minority West Philadelphia middle schoolers. Additionally, I am a HIV tester and data collector for a research team within the Penn’s School of Nursing.
