Hi I'm Marla, and we are raising money to help with my son-in-law Derron's medical bills and cost of living in the Medical Facility he is currently undergoing treatment. This is especially critical now because he has not been able to work since he fell suddenly ill at the beginning of this year. In the early morning hours of January 16th, 2022, Derron got up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night like normal and passed out. My daughter called 911 and when he regained consciousness, he started vomiting just before the paramedics arrived at their home. After regaining consciousness, he was able to walk into the ambulance but while enroute to the Lady of Lordes Emergency Room, he began to complain of a severe headache. The ambulance took him to the ER because his blood pressure was really high. It was at the ER that they found out he actually had a ruptured brain aneurysm. This came as a surprise because he had been having relatively minor headaches off and on but nothing alarming or out of the ordinary. After it was confirmed on CT scans that Derron had actually suffered from 4 aneurysms and the one had ruptured, he was immediately rushed by ambulance to the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) hospital in Philadelphia. It was here that he received more specialized acute care for his severe condition. On January 17th he underwent a 16 hour surgery on his brain to stop the bleeding and to prevent the other 3 aneurysms from rupturing. After having emergency surgery, Derron was left unconscious for weeks and ended up spending a total of 6 weeks at Penn hospital. Gradually he started to respond to external stimuli by doctors who were conducting tests, to measure his brain activity. Derron was then transferred to Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute in Philadelphia, where he continues to make slow but steady progress. He has progressed to the point of opening his eyes, maintaining eye contact and responding to Doctors' commands. He is surrounded by a team of Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Therapists, among others. He has not yet regained his ability to speak and although he is making improvements by moving his extremities, he is still unable to feed himself, dress himself or do anything for himself and hence requiring the continued care of medical staff at Moss Rehab. Derron has health insurance, however even with insurance, our family will still be responsible for any continued treatment past the 30 days that his health insurance will cover. He needs more than 30 days at Moss Rehab in order to continue to make the progress he has been making at this facility but our family needs financial assistance to keep Derron at Moss Rehab, where he can continue to get the care he needs. This, in addition to the cost of daily commutes between South Jersey and Philadelphia where Moss Rehab is located, paying bridge tolls and mounting medical bills, has added to the financial burden our family is experiencing. Coach Farmer, as he is affectionately known, has always been a very involved father, loving husband, and a beloved barber. He has given of his time and resources by volunteering and mentoring as a youth league coach with PYAA and helping the youth in our community, while also coaching my two grandchildren. They love and miss their father dearly and look forward to having him home and well one day. We are hoping that our community can come through for Derron at this time, by providing donations which will help us cover the costs he will continue to incur as he recovers. Getting this specialized treatment will help him to recover and get back to as normal a life as possible. The donations of our family, friends, the community, as well as the public will help take some of the financial burden caused by the cost of care, off our shoulders and will be greatly appreciated.
