This past week, on the day before Mother's Day (5/8/2021), Derek's apartment caught fire which has been deemed accidental. He is currently in ICU awaiting surgery on 5/13/2021 for skin grafts to his upper torso. A total of 20% of his upper torso has 3rd degree burns. In this fire, he has lost everything he has loved and cherished; including 7 ferrets, 2 cats, and other animals/reptiles; as well a lot of prized possessions from his childhood. I have posted one picture of the aftermath of the fire at the bottom of this page to show the damage to his home as it is not for the faint of heart. Derek has always been a loving and generous person, even giving his last food to many of his friends over the years as just a simple example of his kindness. Honestly, the list could go on forever. Everyone that comes to his home is always leaving with an extra item that they didn't intend on leaving with simply because of his giving nature. He's always been this generous of a person to friends and strangers alike.
Living a very humble lifestyle in Charlotte, NC, he will definitely need help with the upcoming medical/hospital/surgical bills as well as getting back on his feet. A new home will need to be located and furnished. His medical bills will be astronomical as well with the amount of surgeries and physical therapy he has coming down the road here very soon also.
I know not everyone is in the position to donate currently, but even if it's $10-$20 dollars, anything can help out in his trying time of need. Collectively we can come together as a commUNITY to help out one of our own! Any little bit can help go a long way in the upcoming troubles he is going to be facing.
