Help Derek and his family with medical costs
Donation protected
Hey all-I am Sarah, Becky's sister, Derek's sister in-law.
On Friday May 14th, Derek cracked/adjusted his own neck, something he has done frequently in the past. Immediately after, Derek began experiencing visual disturbances, nausea, imbalance and dizziness. He was brought to the emergency room a while later where it was determined that he had a right vertebral artery dissection (a tear to the inner lining of the artery that travels along side the spinal cord to deliver blood to the brain). A clot formed which then caused him to have an acute cerebellar stroke in the PICA distribution (posterior inferior cerebellar artery). The cerebellum controls vision, balance and vestibular functions (inner ear), hence, the symptoms he was experiencing. At this time, Derek's most recent CT scan is stable, not worsening. This is a good thing. The team at Region's Hospital has been amazing!
Due to Becky having recently lost her job and Derek having been laid-off due to COVID-19 they are without reliable income currently and also without insurance.
Derek has a long recovery in front of him as he remains inpatient and could be for another day or two. His post-hospitalization recovery will include extensive physical and occupational therapy in order to heal his brain and return back to normal visual and vestibular abilities.
Any donation is helpful...Becky and Derek have two kids (Ben (13) & Ellie (6)), all of the funds will go towards paying mounting medical bills and support the family while Derek is recovering and unable to work. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT!!!
