Help Denny Recover From His Broken Hip

Donation protected
Two weeks ago today, on Saturday June 1st, Denny tripped on an electrical cord and fell hard on the tiled concrete floor of the kitchen.

The fracas and screams of pain brought me immediately to his side. It didn’t take long to realize he had most likely broken his right hip and that this wasn’t anything we could handle ourselves, so I called 9-1-1.

This is when your mind goes on autopilot, an unnatural calm descends upon you and in this eerie state you are expected to make the right decisions, perform what is necessary while your heart wants to scream bloody murder. I was in this shocked state of mind for nearly a week before my emotions caught up with me.

The Paramedics were quick to arrive, assess Denny’s condition, stabilize him, load him up on a gurney and take him to the ER at St. John’s/Pleasant Valley Hospital less than two miles from our home in Camarillo. X-Rays confirmed the fracture, surgery was scheduled for the next day and Denny was admitted to a regular room by the evening.

13 days forward, after a successful surgery (plates and pins and screws) and a stint at an acute rehab physical therapy center, Denny is back home under my care, learning to navigate the environment with a walker and with my hand firmly grasping his belt as a safety measure every step of the way.

So, in a split moment two weeks ago, our lives were completely upended.

Independently from his medical misadventures, Denny was already scheduled to retire from his job at the end of this month, and with the resulting 50% drop in income, it was our urgent task to find a new, more affordable place, pack up and move. Now with his long recovery, and my being his caregiver, that is not going to happen anytime soon. It is just physically impossible. We are facing financial disaster and possible homelessness in the very near future.

We need help.

Besides the immediate financial obligations that will quickly wipe us out, we also need to find an “affordable” abode where we can live with our limited means. Tall order in this over-the-top crazy, greedy housing market.

We are open to creative solutions, such as being caretakers on a larger estate in exchange or partial exchange for rent. We are on a couple of waiting lists for subsidized elder housing, but it could be years before something opens up for us.

We fully realize that inflation is squeezing everyone, and money is hard to come by, but your heartfelt contribution, however small, will help slow the drain and give us the precious gift of time to find something while Denny recovers.
